A fun pointer, Rolex used to date the watches and you were able to check the date on older watches by searching for the serial number online.
As of 2022 this is not available anymore and the only way you can check the legitimacy of your Rolex is by entering the serial number on Google and hope that the search results will display the same model of Rolex.
The second method to tell if your Rolex is fake is by checking the magnifier glass for the date number.
A real Rolex will have a magnifier that can increase the size of the date by 2.5x and the number will still be clear and positioned at the center of the cyclops. A fake Rolex on the other hand will have a number that’s distorted under the magnifier and there will be a blue tint under the glass which is a massive giveaway.
The third method takes a little bit of time and patience, but real Rolex watches have a tiny laser etched crown on the sapphire crystal at the 6 o’clock position. It’s hard to see, but you can angle the watch under a bright light to be able to see the tiny dotted crown.
A fake Rolex will have the crown at the 6 o’clock spot, but it will be overly accentuated and lack the dots or individual depths of the dots as found on the real Rolex.
The fourth method is to check the word ‘Rolex’ which is laser etched around the dial under the sapphire crystal.
The text is clean on the real watch and the letters and numbers are executed perfectly with sharp finishes and accurate placements.
For example, a real Rolex will have the letter ‘X’ aligned with the 1 o’clock hour marker and the letter ‘R’ will be aligned with the 11 o’clock hour marker. A fake Rolex will not have such accurately placed letters, and the finish of the text ‘Rolex’ will be uneven and shabby.
The next method involves examining the text that’s engraved on the rotatable dial and the font of the text on the face of the watch. The hour markers are clean and crisp on the real Rolex, whereas on the fake they will be thin, uneven and placed poorly.
Finally, if your Rolex watch meets all the above mentioned criteria to be considered a real watch, then it’s most likely that the manufacturer has made an identical copy of the real thing.
The sure shot way you can tell if your Rolex is real or fake is by taking a close look at the movements.
A real Rolex wll feel absolutely smooth while interacting with it through the crown. For example, unwinding a real Rolex crown will be a little tough and there will be resistance, but when setting the time or winding the watch up, the feeling should be buttery smooth.
Fakes on the other hand feel horrible and rough while unwinding the crown or setting the time. This is because no matter how hard the manufacturer might try or how high quality the fake may be, the finished product will never be able to replicate a genuine Rolex movement.
There will always be telltale signs that the watch is fake simply by looking at the back and feeling the movement while winding the crown.
